Chapter Fourteen

Paul’s office was at the very top floor—a third floor that was accessible only through a false bookcase and then up some spiral steps. A tower, really. A tower which most of the staff, except Ricardo, was forbidden to enter. “Of course I didn’t think about the bloody office,” Ricardo told Constable Cho on their way up. “Even I wasn’t allowed in unless he was there, and with Paul gone…” He waved at the door at the end of the staircase. “It’s also only accessible with a code that only Paul had. Well, Paul and Jackson, apparently. I didn’t know he trusted Jackson with it.”

“How do we know he’s there for sure?” Maya asked.

“Wifi signal,” Gemma butted in. “We noticed it was slower than usual and got inside the network. Saw his laptop connected, kicked it out, and…” She laughed. “Little prick called us from Paul’s office phone to tell us to stop it. He was streaming movies or someshit from in there. Anyway, we asked him to open the door just so we can check he was okay, and he asked for you. Something along the lines of if she cared so much, she should be here.”

“Ah, so not my charm after all,” Maya said with a sigh. She knocked on the steel door. “Are you in there, Jackson?”

There was no reply.

“Of course, he was probably just yanking our chains around,” Gemma said.

“Do you have a suspect yet?” Ricardo demanded, glancing at Constable Cho.

“I was just getting to that,” Constable Cho said. “We do need you and that gardener, what’s his name? To come into the station for a statement and fingerprints. We just have to make sure everyone’s ruled out before we say anything to the press.”

Maya had to pretend not to sigh in relief. Constable Cho wasn’t going to start blaring her situation around—not for a while, anyway.

Ricardo glowered. “Why do I need to go down to the station for? I can talk right here,” he demanded. “I’d just arrived after he asked me to fetch his sister and she decided she was going to escape like a deranged lunatic down the street. I was on my way back out for a personal matter while Paul got ready for his meeting. I—”

“Why couldn’t you pick up Jackson?” Constable Cho asked.

“I had a bloody date,” Ricardo hissed. “Which I missed, by the way, so thank you very much for that.” He grumbled under his breath some more. “I was going to pick Maya up before Jackson’s school was over, and of course, that went to shit. So I turned around and returned here to tell Paul. I couldn’t find him anywhere in the house. Gemma told me he was getting ready in the garage and went out to fetch him. And then she found him out there, and…”

“Mmm, right. We know all of this. We just want to make sure, like I said. Could you pass over the details of this date to my partner? We’d love to have a chat with her, too.
